| History of Sunrise of Africa School
In the late 60´s, when Corinne, after qualifying at Edinburgh University, returned to Kenya, she immediately started teaching Sunday School and soon became its Superintendent. She used to "scoop up" waiting neighbourhood children, pile them into her old Landcruiser and took them to Sunday School each week. In the 1990´s, Corinne and Thomas Mugera became elected Readers at First Church of Christ, Scientist in Nairobi for the next three years. Later, back in the Sunday School, one of Corinne´s top class students, Edward Waruinge, asked, "Why don´t we start a Christian Science school?" The seed of establishing Christian Science school in Kenya was sewn. In 2004, Sunrise of Africa School, Waithaka, Nairobi West was opened with three children, one teacher and one cook in a rented tin hut. Corinne, Thomas and his wife, Janet, and Sammy Aloyo, a former Sunday School student, came together as the Board of Sunrise. Thomas has a busy Christian Science practice, which embraces Sunrise , this being his free contribution to the school. He also helps Sunrise in practical ways. Corinne has 40 years of business experience, and works with her husband, George, in their family engineering businesses. She is the Treasurer and Donor Representative for Sunrise. Janet is an experienced teacher in a deaf school and supervises, free of charge, all the academic matters in the school. Sammy is an experienced I.T. advisor on the Board. "We were taking church to the people, rather than having them come all the way, with expensive fares, into the congested centre of Nairobi ," says Corinne. "Thomas had to convince the local pastors that Christian Science is an uplifting way of life. It´s amazing how their views slowly changed. Now with 150 children in our School, we are accepted and respected in the community. We even have a waiting list for our classes up to age 10! All our children receive Monday School which is like our C.S. Sunday School."
The Teacher Training College in the area chose Sunrise School for their teacher trainee practice because of its good academic standards and harmonious atmosphere. The District Officer for Children´s Affairs in Waithaka recently selected Sunrise School to place three disadvantaged children. In 2008, Sunrise of Africa School Garden Grove, Nairobi East, Kitengela, opened its nursery doors with eight children on its own five acre plot of land. There are now over twenty children from ages three to eight and the numbers are growing. Also a C.S. Society and Sunday School have been started. This school will eventually include a secondary school where the students will receive, apart from the normal academic curriculum, vocational training, so that graduates can either find jobs or choose to attend university.
